Dispersion Effects

Peter R. Scheiner / Stefan Grimme / Benjamin List

email: synlett@mpi-muelheim.mpg.de

Dispersion interactions are the counterpart of steric repulsion that has served classic models in organic synthesis well. Over the last few years, it has become apparent that the interplay of the two is essential for understanding thermodynamic stability, molecular recognition, chemical selectivity through transition-state stabilization, protein folding, enzyme catalysis, and more. Dispersion is much better understood now but it is not yet at the verge of being routinely included in synthesis planning. Making rational use of dispersion as a strategic element in synthesis is therefore a timely issue.

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in Chemical Synthesis and Catalysis

Benjamin List / Connor W. Coley

email: synlett@mpi-muelheim.mpg.de

Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) are currently substantially growing in all areas of chemistry but a Cluster devoted to applications in chemical synthesis and catalysis, despite the particularly tremendous potential of ML and AI in these areas, has been missing. If you are an active researcher in this field we invite you to contribute.
